A left foot accelerator is a driving aid designed for people who have limited or no use of their right leg. It allows the driver to operate the gas pedal with their left foot, while still using their right foot for braking (if they are able), or using hand controls if necessary. These are most commonly used by drivers with a disability, injury, or amputation affecting the right leg. Depending on your vehicle year, make and model you will be given two options. Left foot accelerators can be mechanical or electronic designs. With both the electronic and mechanical designs you will be allowed to operate the OEM gas pedal on the vehicle when someone else drives the vehicle. Never driven with a left foot accelerator? Having an evaluation completed with your voc rehab or driver evaluation center can get you safely behind the wheel driving with a left foot accelerator.
Simple and effective, the mechanical left foot accelerator has a low profile base that gets bolted to the driver floorboard which the mechanical left foot accelerator will clip in and out of. Vehicles older than the 2012 model year will likely need this design installed as the technology in the vehicle is not capable with the electronic design. Wiring harnesses below the carpet and brake lines, exhaust, gas lines and other components under the carpet can add additional installation time and challengers. Can I transfer the mechanical left foot accelerator to my next car? Yes, but not always, when it gets installed it might require the transfer shaft to be trimmed to fit between the pedals. Looks and operates the same as the OEM gas pedal, the electronic left foot accelerator is a plug and play system. When the dealer orders the system for you they will need your complete 17 digit vin number. Each electronic left foot accelerator is programmed for your specific vehicle and is turned on with the press of a button installed on your dash. If the system is on, the OEM pedal is automatically turned off so you do not need an accelerator guard installed blocking the OEM pedal. Switch between with the press of a button making it easier for others to drive your vehicle. Check out our Youtube video demoing the electronic left foot accelerator HERE.
