BraunAbility MXV Q&A
For those mobility users who have spent years in a minivan the Ford Explorer MXV, by BraunAbility, is the much-welcomed breath of fresh air; it is their opportunity to get out of the routine minivan platform and express their individuality. However, the size of the MXV has had some potential buyers concerned that they might not fit, or there won’t be enough space to maintain comfort and ease of use. Your team at BLVD.com wanted to look more into these concerns and help to answer some common questions customers have about the BraunAbility MXV.
When using my van, sometimes I like to drive, and sometimes I like to ride in the passenger position. Will the MXV be able to accommodate my versatility needs?
- Yes, The MXV offers an option to easily remove either the driver’s seat, the passenger seat, or both. When either seat is removed, a user can have up to 27” of available width within the driver or passenger position. As an added convenience, the seats are on caster wheels once removed, meaning you can easily move the seats to a convenient location outside the vehicle.
My wheelchair is exceptionally long, will the MXV have enough interior space to accommodate my situation?
- Yes, since the front passenger seat can be removed, there is plenty of room in the MXV for an extra-long wheelchair provided you remove the passenger seat and place the wheelchair comfortably on the passenger side of the vehicle.
I prefer to transfer into the OEM driver’s seat, rather than having to drive from my chair, does anyone even make a transfer seat for this conversion?
- Yes! B&D Independence makes a transfer seat application for the MXV. It has all the features that you would be used to in a transfer seat. Also, the BraunAbility MXV now comes standard with a passenger seat that can tilt forward to accommodate a smooth transfer.
The reason I want a MXV is so that I can take my family on a vacation, but I’m concerned that with being smaller than a minivan, there will not be enough room for everyone to fit comfortably.
- While it is true that there are not as many seating positions in the MXV as a conversion minivan, there is still enough room for 4 seats and one wheelchair. Even though you lose one seating position, the comfort of the front and rear seats far outweigh the loss. The rear seats are taken out of the OEM Ford Explorer, and they are each an independent bucket seat. In the case that the whole family isn’t coming, they can even stow into the floor, allowing for much more cargo space.
