United Spinal Association - United Spinal Association was founded in 1946 by veterans with spinal cord injuries to help enable members, as well as others with disabilities, to lead full and productive lives. Approximately 700,000 Americans have disabilities related to the spinal cord including spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, polio, spina bifida, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease).   The road back to a full and productive life has been charted and paved by United Spinal Association.  We have been committed to enhancing the lives of individuals with spinal cord disabilities through our various outreach activities, services and programs. United Spinal Association’s membership is free and open to all these individuals, regardless of their ages.


The University of Kansas, SPED - The Department of Special Education at The University of Kansas, provides a variety of professional opportunities for students committed to the improvement of lifestyles for children, youth, and adults with disabilities.

The University of Michigan Model Spinal Cord Injury Care System - Since 1985, the UM Model Spinal Cord Injury Care System has been operating within the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at the University of Michigan Health System. It is funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR). Our basic purpose is to demonstrate and evaluate improved outcomes resulting from providing a continuity of comprehensive and innovative health care services to people with spinal cord injuries (SCI). The outcomes that we have paid particular attention to in our research are secondary medical complications, community reintegration, and improved functional recovery, and overall quality of life. The system is evaluating whether improved outcomes can be achieved while simultaneously reducing overall, long-term costs of care.

UTHSCSA Department of Rehabilitation Medicine - Rehabilitation Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio is a medical specialty that deals with the evaluation and treatment of patients whose functional abilities have been impaired. The Department of Rehabilitation is very fortunate to have an experienced and talented faculty who possess expertise in the following areas: spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, pain management, prosthetics and orthotics, electrodiagnostic medicine, pediatric rehabilitation, general physical medicine, and rehabilitation.

Mike Utley Foundation - On November 17, 1991, Detroit Lions' offensive guard Mike Utley (#60), was paralyzed during an NFL game. His courageous "THUMBS UP" gesture has become the national symbol of Mike's fighting spirit. This foundation is "dedicated to finding a cure for spinal cord injuries," is committed to providing financial support of selected research, rehab and education programs on SCI, plus "motivational and emotional support for individuals who have been disabled with such injuries."

Kent Waldrep National Paralysis Foundation - KWNPF has striven to increase awareness of paralysis due to spinal cord and brain injuries. As a result of brain and spinal cord injuries, 100,000 people are permanently disabled every year. Two-thirds of those injured are people under 30, making spinal cord and brain injury the leading killer and disabler of children and young adults. Through our efforts, we hope to assist scientists increase the rate and level of recovery for newly injured victims through the development of new drug therapies and treatments, as well as finding a permanent CURE for those who have been afflicted with chronic and long-term paralysis.

WorkWORLD - is decision support software for personal computers designed to help people with disabilities, advocates, benefit counselors, and others explore and understand how to best use the work incentives associated with the various Federal and State disability and poverty benefit programs. It automates the computation of benefits, and takes into account the complex interaction of income, benefit programs, and work incentives.

World Institute on Disability - WID is a nonprofit research, training and public policy center promoting the civil rights and the full societal inclusion of people with disabilities.
